DuPont 2004 Projects
Zinc Smelter Plant
Spelter, WV

The project entailed leveling thirty-three buildings on a 112-acre parcel of land situated in close proximity to the nearby community of Spelter. Approximately fifty acres were covered with zinc tailings and there was also significant metals dust accumulation within the buildings from the smeltering operation that began in 1911. These issues, along with the other environmental concerns (asbestos, transformers, etc.) coupled with a strict schedule, created a very challenging project.

Recmediation's project team approached this project in a logical, pased manner. Prior to any work being initiated, a detailed Site Health and Safety Plan, Demolition Work Plan and Asbestos Work Plan were developed with input and review from PEs and CIHs. These plans took into consideration the close proximity of nearby residential dwellings as well as all other safety, environmental and regulatory issues. The work plans, along with the other documents, were then submitted to the WVDEP for regulatory approval.

After obtaining the necessary permits and approvals, Recmediation presented their plan to the local population at a community meeting held onsite.

Prior to any demolition being conducted, environmental issues had to be addressed and abated. Several contaminants were present that needed to be decontaminated, handled and disposed appropriately prior to demolition including metals, dust, PCB transformers, some sludge's, batteries, lights and ballasts. Due to the complexity of the contaminants, stringent safety measures were in place and all workers were required to wear modified Level C PPE. In addition, ACM was present throughout the facility, which was abated prior to demolition.

Demolition of the structures was accomplised utilizing a DH450 excavator with shead, a DH320 excavator with grapple, a PC300 excavator with grapple, A Komatsu PC 400 with 5000 lb. hammer, A PC 220 excavator with grapple and bucket. A DH 400 off road truck, a water truck, a 863 Bobcat Skid steer loader with a grapple and forks, a 963 tracked loader, two Jigs (a 120 foot and a 80 foot), and a 3900 Manitowoc 100 ton lattice boom crane.

One structure that was not demolished mechanically was a 15 ft. diameter x 175 ft. high concrete/brick stack. The stack was imploded.

More than 3,000 tons of scrap steel were generated from the project. Masonry and brick were sized onsite and used as fill.

The project was completed ahead of schedule and lasted approximately siz months. A total of 23,800 man-hours were completed without incident or injury.

The project value was over two million dollars.
